What Salamastra is a team of sailing enthusiasts who spend their summer holidays sailing in the Greek waters.
The common goal is to enjoy the power and beauty of Nature, while exploring charming little spots, far from the summer crowds.
Who There are no professional seamen among the group, but several members have a sailing record of thousands of miles.
The trip is coordinated by the 'hard-core' [i.e. those who started it all and have participated in all journeys], with new members being introduced each year, depending on the availability of berths on a 'first come, first served' basis.
When The duration of each journey is usually 2 weeks; however some crew join for week 1 or 2 only, according to their wish and/or available places.
August is the usual month for the journey, since it is a convenient holiday period for everybody. The weather is perfect for leisure sailing then, although sometimes it might be too hot or windy.
Where The Greek seas, both the Aegean & Ionian, are ideal for sailing: Numerous islands, long coastline, good winds, fine weather, it's all there.
Therefore each year there are many options to choose from in terms of area to sail
The final decision is sometimes dictated by the whereabouts of the hired boat on the day of departure and the required port of delivery at the end of the journey.
Trip legs vary in length from 10 to 80 miles, according to the schedule, the weather, or the mood of the day.
Usually there several anchoring options, alternating between quite bays, small fishing hamlets, or busy trendy ports, for 1-3 nights.
How Preparations start as early as June, including boat hire, crew booking & itinerary decisions, etc. These matters are discussed in several meetings, which form another important aspect of Salamastra, as it is a good excuse for social fun ashore.
Decisions prior or during the journey like route, ports of call, etc. are taken collectively, in conjunction with the dictates of weather and experience.
Expenses for boat hire and basic supplies like water, ice, food & drinks, fuel, etc. are shared on a 'per person, per day' basis.
During the past three years the daily cost per capita for boat hire & common expenses was about $50, not including personal expenses ashore.
Meals are taken either on board (usualy prepared  by Lefteris, our 'Captain Cook' following a successful catch by the divers of the crew), or at a taverna ashore.
In few words, Salamastra's spirit is indicated by our motto:
s a i l i n g ,   t a s t i n g ,   e n j o y i n g
